Organize Your Planning Team
In order to host a successful Move it Outside event, it helps to organize a team to assist with the planning and execution. An ideal team consists of six to ten individuals and can include anyone who is willing to support your event.
Following is a suggested list activities for planning a successful Move it Outside event.
Getting Started:
- Work with an adult advisor to identify a team of students in your school to serve on the Move it Outside planning team.
- Identify a group of youth to mentor for your Move it Outside event consider an elementary school in your school district, local boy/girl scout troop, after-school program, etc.
- Approach the youth group leader and ask if they're willing to partner with you on this activity. Select a date to hold the event that best suits your planning team and the group of youth.
- Hold regular planning team meetings to work out the details of the event (suggest weekly or bi-weekly depending on the extent of the event)
Planning your Event:
Move It Outside is not a one-size, fits all event. Activities vary from school to school, group to group, and community to community. Please see Celebration Ideas (PDF) and Frisbee Games & Activities (PDF) for event ideas.
Other suggestions include:
- Holding an outdoor "minutes in motion" competition and asking students to keep an outdoor activity log during the week of Move it Outside.
- Teach the youth group about why they should be active, and the importance of physical activity. Download activity ideas and an activity tracker at www.kohlshealthyfamilies.org.
- Partner with a local conservation group and ask them to host a class on the importance of environmental conservation or "leave no trace." A follow-up activity may include taking the youth group on a walk at a local park or trail to implement some of the lessons learned.
- Organize an outdoor hike or walk at a local park/trail. End the hike by asking youth to help you identify additional "active zones" within the community.
Promoting your Event:
Once you've selected a Move It Outside mentoring activity and youth group to work with, it's time to begin promoting your event. Please use the following template documents as needed.
- Sample Press Release (share this with local media in advance of your event)
- Sample Morning Announcement (share this with the youth group leader)
- Sample Parent Letter (ask the youth group leader to send this home with each child)
- Move it Outside Participation Certificate (print a copy of the certificate for each child in the youth group)
